Railway Safety Engineer (F/X/M) (36-40 h/w)
Railway infrastructure is rapidly digitizing, shifting away from traditional relay-based systems. Pilz supports this transition with PSSrail, an open and flexible SIL4capable platform designed for a wide range of railway applications; from level crossings and object controllers for point machine, to long distance communication systems.
An increasing number of customers need guidance, or look for outsourcing, in configuring and deploying these solutions. That’s why we want you to join the engineering team of Pilz’s Business Unit Rail. In this team, depending on the project, you take on responsibilities such as:
- Design & Implementation of PSSrail-based solutions
- Testing & Verification to ensure compliance and safety
- Technical project lead for your own engineering projects
- Working directly with customers and suppliers at a technical level
If you enjoy combining deep technical work with customer interaction, this role offers both variety and impact, where you will be working from The Netherlands and closely with our teams in Germany and Austria.

For this position, the following are must-haves
- You have completed a technical education in automation engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a comparable field;
- You have basic knowledge of electrical engineering;
- You have 5 years of comparable work experience after graduation;
- You have solid programming skills in any programming language;
- You are proficient in Dutch (≥B2 for listening/speaking, ≥B1 for reading/writing);
- You are proficient in English (≥C1 for reading/listening, ≥B2 for writing/speaking);
- You have a structured, precise, and reliable working style;
- You have good problem-solving skills and easy comprehension of complex technical systems;
- Writing detailed technical documentation doesn’t scare you;
- You’re open to learning new technologies as well as rail specific standards and processes;
- You don’t mind to travel internationally: a few days, 2-4 times per year.
The following skills are welcome; any experience towards these is considered a plus.
- You have worked with rail‑specific safety systems before, and have ample experience with standards EN 50126, EN 50129, and EN 50716;
- You have ample experience with (safety‑related) programmable logic controllers (PLCs);
- You have mastered programming in C, C#, ASP.NET core, or Python;
- Making electrical hardware designs in EPLAN is an easy task for you;
- You are a senior in requirements engineering with software such as IBM Doors or Polarion;
- You are able to test, verify and validate requirements, or even have an ISTQB tester qualification;
- You have an excellent understanding of communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, RaSTA, EULYNX, FSE, or TRDP;
- You speak German as well.
